BLOOD DRIVES

Act now to avoid a summer blood shortage
Summer means two things for LifeSouth Community Blood Centers - the demand for blood will remain strong, while the number of donors often goes down - and that could spell serious trouble ahead.

"Supplies are currently adequate, but as we look ahead...we can see that the number of groups that have scheduled blood drives is down considerably, and that's very troubling," said Nancy Eckert, LifeSouth CEO.  "The best way to tackle a blood shortage is to prevent it, and we need the help of the entire community now to do that."

Just how serious is the deficit ahead?  LifeSouth supplies blood for more than 130 medical facilities in Alabama, Georgia and Florida and system-wide needs about 800 units of blood donated daily just to meet those needs.  The current projections show donations running 18,000 units behind the anticipated need...

Vacations will frequently take regular donors out of the area, cutting into the ability to resupply local blood needs.  Enrollment drops on college campuses as well, and students are a major source of blood donations.

LifeSouth is requesting that businesses schedule blood drives, where LifeSouth bring the drive to you, saving donors time and gas.  Nearly 85% of blood that LifeSouth collects comes from drives outside of its donor centers.  Businesses large and small, churches and civic groups can call sto schedule a drive.  LifeSouth can bring a bloodmobile or set up a drive in a spare room or office.  And if you think your organization is too small, LifeSouth says think again.

LifeSouth says if they can get eight participants in four hours that it's well worth their time and effort.  Small groups can also join together to host a drive.

Not only can a blood drive help bring a group together for a common cause, it can really be fun.  All summer long, LifeSouth is offering blood drives with a summer camp theme, and donors get a special T-shirt for making the effort.  Anyone age 17 or older, in good health and weighing 110 pounds is eligible to donate.  A photo ID is required.

As you donate, you'll be able to snack on Smores.

To learn more about booking a blood drive, call 256-894-6066 or email aghanners@lifesouth.org.

What better way to support your community this summer than giving the gift of life to one of your neighbors.

LifeSouth Donor Center, Highway 431, Albertville is now open 6 days a week in an effort  to keep pace with the local need for blood.  Hours are Mon-Wed-Fri, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Tues & Thurs, 9:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.; and Sat. 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Red Cross
Summer generally brings to mind backyard barbecue and family vacations, but record high gas prices have put a damper on summer travel plans for many families.  The American Red Cross hopes its summer promotion will provide three lucky blood donors a little relief at the pump.  Everyone who presents to donate blood or platelets between now and September 30, 2008 can enter to win one of three $1,000.00 gas cards as part of its "Save a Life and See America" promotion.  Blood shortages are common during the summer months due to a decrease in blood donations.  The American Red Cross Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Blood Services Region needs 800 people to donate blood each weekday to meet the needs of patients in approximately 100 hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout the region.  A single donation can save up to three lives.  Please call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment to donate blood today.
