Bison meat recalled
July 6, 2010 - Rocky Mountain Natural Meats is recalling more than 65-thousand pounds of ground bison meat and bison steak products. The CO-based company says the meat could be contaminated with E.coli bacteria.

Six different ground meat and steak products are involved in the recall, all with “sell or freeze by” dates in June. The U-S Department of Agriculture (USDA) says the meat was sold in retail stores across the U-S and by food service distributors in Utah and Arizona.

Symptoms of E.coli include bloody diarrhea, dehydration and severe cramping. In severe cases, the infection can cause kidney failure.

Kellogg's recalls breakfast cereal
The Kellogg Co. has issued a voluntary recall of 28 million boxes of some of its most popular cereals because of an "uncharacteristic off-flavor and smell" coming from packaging.  The recall includes Froot Loops, Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, and Honey Smacks that have been sold around the country, the company says.

Kellogg says on its web site that "while the potential for serious health problems is low, some consumers are sensitive" to the odd odors and "should not eat the recalled products because of possible temporary symptoms, including nausea and diarrhea."

The company says only products with the letters "KN" following the words "better if used before date" are included in the recall.
It says consumers who have questions or want a replacement for any cereal bought can call Kellogg at 888-801-4163.  Here's a list of recalled cereals with their UPC numbers, according to Kellogg's web site:

Toyota recalls hybrids
Toyota is recalling about 17,000 hybrid cars sold under the Lexus name.  The company says the 2010 Lexus HS 250h hybrid spilled too much gas during crash tests.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) discovered during tests the cars spilled more gas than is allowed under safety guidelines.  Toyota is not only issuing a recall, but has stopped selling this particular  model.

Dog food recalled by Natural Balance
Natural Balance is recalling some of its dog food because of a possible salmonella contamination. The Sweet Potato & Chicken Dry Dog Food is the only Natural Balance product involved in the recall.

According to the U-S Food and Drug Administration (FDA), a sample of the product tested positive for salmonella in a random sample test. Salmonella can affect animals and there is a risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products.

The recalled dog food comes in five and 28-pound bags, and is stamped with a “Best By” date of June 17, 2011. The dog food was sold at pet specialty stores in 26 states.

No Chicken & Rice TV Dinners
ConAgra Foods has recalled its Marie Callender’s Cheesy Chicken & Rice meals, after federal food inspectors reported a possible link between the frozen dish and a 15-state outbreak of salmonella.  Since consumers began reporting illnesses in April and May, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration have been investigating how a rare type of salmonella called Salmonella Chester managed to affect dozens of people in 15 states, coast-to-coast.

The federal probe has not conclusively traced the outbreak to any foods, but eight out of 30 affected by Salmonella Chester also reported eating the Marie Callender’s dinner. No deaths have been reported.  On Friday, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture laboratory told the CDC that it had isolated Salmonella Chester from an unopened package of the frozen food, submitted by a case patient.

Major grocery chains like Giant Food LLC and Stop & Shop Supermarket Co. have also removed their stocks of the Marie Callender’s dish. The CDC has advised consumers to thoroughly follow cooking instructions on frozen dinner labels. Consumers must bake their dinners for as long as they need to be cooked, it said, and should check the food’s internal temperature.

Uh-oh! SpaghettiOs!
Campbells Soup Company is recalling three varieties of its popular canned spaghetti. The company says some of the products may have been under-processed.  Thirty-five thousand cases are in question. A routine warehouse inspection and follow-up investigation at a Paris, TX facility found the potentially under-processed food. Customers who eat the affected product could experience nausea or vomiting.
The recalled product includes:
--14.75-ounce cans of SpaghettiOs with Meatballs, with the product code “U5” on the bottom of the can
--14.75-ounce cans of SpaghettiOs A to Z with Meatballs, with the product code “4N” on the bottom of the can
--14.75-ounce cans of SpaghettiOs Fun Shapes with Meatballs (Cars), with the product code “KS” on the bottom of the can
All three products would also bear the establishment number EST 4K, as well as a Use By date between June 2010 and December 2011.
